Why Train Your Dog?

There are many reasons why you should train your dog: whether it be to have a high-scoring obedience competitor or a well-mannered family member. The most important reason to train your dog is because it strengthens the bond between you and your dog. It builds communication, understanding, mutual respect, and subtly but effectively demontrates to your dog that you're the leader of the pack. If your dog doesn't respect you as his leader you may both be in big trouble, particularly if he's a bit rowdy or dominant by nature.

Teaching basic skills by positive training can begin in early puppyhood and continue as your dog matures. While he does not need to learn a large number of tricks or how to heel perfectly, he does need to know the fundamentals: how to sit, say please, walk on a leash, have good manners in the house, greet people respectfully, and settle himself on a mat or in a crate. He also needs to learn not to guard his toys, food, or bones, and to enjoy attention from people.

Pet Athletic Club trainers will design exercises to teach your dog these fundamentals of good behavior. We'll also show you how to continue and reinforce what your dog learns at The PAC, because training needs to be a daily and ongoing process. In fact, we encourage you to set aside a few minutes each day for formal training sessions with your dog. It's also beneficial to occasionally attend group training classes. Keep in mind that every interaction with your dog is an opportunity to train.

Training helps forge a strong bond of love and respect and creates a safe relationship, especially with children. You and your trainer work together toward the goal of success for your dog, and ultimately you.

Quick Tip

The ideal time to start training begins at six to eight weeks, maybe even earlier depending on the puppy. Remember, it's never too late to teach a dog a new trick.
